Mobile Number Portability comes to India finally!
Department of Telecommunications has great news for the Indian mobile user. They have announced that ‘number portability’ would soon be introduced in India.
For starters, it would be available to mobile users in the metro cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
They are aiming to make it available by the fourth quarter of 2008. The system would allow a mobile user to keep his/her number while switching from one service provider to another.
The system would require some major investments from the mobile operators in the country. It would also mean that the market would see more competition in the future as they would no longer be able to retain customers just because some of their customers cannot afford to change their mobile numbers.
Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) secretary general T V Ramachandran had this to say on this new announcement: “Why is portability being announced only for mobile and not for fixed line and that also only in cities where connectivity is not a problem unlike other cities? We are concerned at these half measures.”

‘Number Portability’ announcement by the DoT is indeed a very good news for people like me. I’m residing in almost central Bangalore & using Hutch (Vodafone) from past more than 3 1/2 years. Initially their service want very good, but as they got more customers day by day their service became worst. I’m facing network problem from past 2 years, I have given complaint to them regarding this about more than 25 times, all the time their answer was “We are working on this problem, it will be shortly rectified”. They are yet to solve this problem. It is very difficult for me to change my number. I’m very delighted by the government’s announcement about ‘Number Portability’.
NOW I NO NEED TO BEG HUTCH (VODAFONE) TO IMPROVE THEIR NETWORK.

hii….this move by the telecom department will be welcomed by all users.though m not sure as to how to service providers will react to it.this move will ensure that the service providers will try n give thier best .the main reason why people are reluctant to change the service is because of the trouble taht comes with changing the phone number.Nothing now can stop the customers from switching to some other service.i hope the service providers are now all geared up to woo the consumers asn provide the best customer service.
