BSNL to work with Soma Networks to provide WiMAX solutions

Indian telecom operator BSNL has said that they are now collaborating with US-based WiMAX solutions firm Soma Networks for their WiMAX initiative in the country.

The two companies would work towards providing WiMAX solutions in four states in three circles.

They are going to establish an infrastructure which would cater to around 20 crore people in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Goa.

The first stage of this plan would see Ahmedabad getting WiMAX network by June-July this year. The entire project would take around three years for completion.

BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal spoke on this new development: “BSNL has awarded the contract to Soma for complete deployment in these states. It’s difficult to put a value to the contract since it’s on a revenue-share basis.”

Soma Networks MD Jatinder Ahuja added: “We would ride on BSNL’s infrastructure and provide our solutions based on the 802.16e-2005 standard, which ensures greater subscriber density.”

Is the technology used in current broadband service by BSNL being abandoned ?

What about the rest of India other than MH,GOA,GJ and AP ?

Is the current broadband service avilable beyond 4 km from the equipment installation point ?
