Telecom Regulatory Authority of India wants local players to get 3G permissions

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has said that they are asking the government to limit the spectrum availability for 3G services to existing players only.

This suggestion was made after Department of Telecom asked them on whether foreign players should be allowed to bid for this spectrum or not.

TRAI stated: “The existing licensees due to their available infrastructure are in a better position to deliver 3G services efficiently, quickly and at low incremental cost in the Indian price sensitive market.”

This would prevent companies like AT&T to get access to 3G spectrum in the Indian market. TRAI added: “Currently, the UAS license permits a foreign company 74 per cent foreign direct investment. With 13-14 licensees in each service area, the authority believes that any new aspirant can join hands with the existing licensees.”
